Meet Athena

Athena Lorin Hall, MD

With over nine years of experience as a pediatric hospitalist and two years in a global health fellowship serving resource-limited communities, I’ve gained an invaluable perspective on both the strengths and shortcomings of our healthcare systems—and the opportunities to reimagine them.

I am deeply committed to advancing a community-centered, humanized, and equitable approach to healthcare, one that prioritizes mental health, prevention, and connection.

Grounded in collaboration, trauma-informed care, and meaningful community engagement, my work focuses on transforming how care is delivered and experienced.

To bring this vision to life, I founded ZNA Health Network, a platform that connects healthcare professionals, community leaders, and innovators to share ideas, co-create solutions, and strengthen the systems that support health and healing for all.

Athena's Story

My work abroad revealed something I couldn’t unsee: systems designed without communities will always fall short.

During my global health fellowship in Rwanda, I saw overflowing maternity wards and babies dying from hospital-acquired infections. Parents had to make the impossible decision of selling their land and animals to pay for one child’s hospital bill. It was heartbreaking to witness the impact of implementing a Western healthcare model on a community without truly understanding what they needed.

I realized this wasn’t unique to Rwanda. In the U.S., we also impose a one-size-fits-all system—one where two-thirds of bankruptcies stem from medical debt, and only 3% of healthcare spending goes toward prevention.

A few years into practicing as a pediatric hospitalist, I started burning out. I loved caring for patients, but I felt isolated within a system that rewarded efficiency over empathy and medications and procedures over prevention. Over time, I came to see that the interventions creating real change are those designed with communities, not for them. When people are involved in shaping their own systems of care, the solutions are more effective, sustainable, and adaptable.

I created ZNA Health Network to bring people together across sectors so we can work with our communities to reimagine healthcare. I truly believe that when people unite under a shared purpose, we can achieve what once seemed impossible.
